The postcards are wonderful ! Thank you so much for all the work that you put into it.Windleshaw Abbey was especially interesting for to me to see as my mother and grandparents are buried there.I have a picture of a Street party that I would like to submit, I believe it was VE Day, Powell Street ,Sutton. My cousin Maggie Pennington is in the picture.

I m so happy to see this web site. I was born in st Helens - and attended Lowe House School. I left home when I was 21yrs and came to Australia. My dear Brothers are still in St helens. My brother John sent your web address to me. I will be a very keen viewer.Keep up the good work. |

My mum went to Cowley as well - her surname was Longworth - she says you must remember 'Founders Day'

What a lovely site! My Gran used to have some of these postcards but I hadn't seen these images for over 40 years. I can remember Church Street before it was modernised/pedestrianised. I lived in St Helens from 1963-1978, and went to Cowley Girls School, in the days of the bottle green uniform! :)

In answer to your question Mark Abbott, my gr. uncle was Joseph Critchlow Ser.No.426165 in the Royal Engineers 419th coy. He was killed in action 9/4/1918. He is commemorated on the Loos memorial and also the memorial in St.Helens

If Edna Smith can let me have her relatives service number, I'll see if I have anything in my records.
I am researching the St Helens Royal engineers in WW1. |

I'm glad you have found the site useful. I do have the option of adding pictures of the soldiers, memorials, and graves - as yet though I'm still concentrating on getting the names onto the site - a long slow process as it means going through 2 lists of recorde to get the information needed!

Great site. I had a great uncle killed 1918 in WW1 and it was great to see his name among the list of soldiers.I knew he was in the Royal Engineers but now you have provided me with his number. I have a photograph of him in his uniform with some other soldiers but don't know who they are.

Also after looking at the images on here of our town.. its really nice to see so many memories of the old St.helens. Its a good thing to think that some of our great grandparents, or even grandparents were around then to see this town as the way we see it now on memory photographs.. its them what made our town so unique until recently where we are now under such a county where none of us true st.helens folk ever want to be named under. we are independant and we will always be that way. great site thanks

Theres one thing I am looking for what I would love to find are pictures of new street estate before they impovised on it quite a few years ago. As i was brought up on that estate, it would be nice to see what it was, as a reminder of good memories. I have tried everywhere but cant seem to find any

Thanks for the pictures of Carr Mill - great memories. I have some old pictures (saved from other resources) that you don't have that are saved to my hard drive. I'm not sure if I would be infringing copyright if I shared them though.

Just thought I should mention that the st Helens Soldiers are going to take longer than anticipated - there are nearly 2500, and research is a little slow ----- but we're working on it!
